Title: ECCC 2020: March 12-15, 2020
Post by: Transmute Jun on October 09, 2018, 03:53:27 PM
A look through the Washington State Convention Center's website has revealed the dates for ECCC 2020!

https://www.friendsofcc.com/2018/10/09/con-intel-eccc-2020-dates-revealed/ (https://www.friendsofcc.com/2018/10/09/con-intel-eccc-2020-dates-revealed/)

I'm already planning for this con! Anyone else?

Badges will go on sale October 23 (likely at noon Pacific time).

https://www.friendsofcc.com/2019/08/30/eccc-2020-badges-to-go-on-sale-on-october-23/

Pro and press applications will open on Friday, September 6. If press and pros apply by October 16, they will hear back in time to know if they need to participate in the general sale.

Who is planning to go to ECCC 2020?

Is buying ECCC badges difficult? I'll be in Disneyland during the sale and will probably have to purchase them on my phone.

Yes and no. If you are clicking the purchase button the moment the sale begins, then you're going to be able to get a 4-Day badge. Once those sell out, you can still buy the days individually, although it is a little more expensive. The ability to buy all 4 days separately usually lasts for up to a week. Saturday is the first individual day to sell out.

They've introduced "Premium Packages" this year -- basically, they're bringing back VIP:

https://www.emeraldcitycomiccon.com/Buy-Tickets/Tickets/

I know it's early, but based on the announcements so far (not necessarily guests, but re: logistics) they seem to be running a very tight ship...moreso than the past two years. I'm thinking 2020 may actually turn out to be a good year for ECCC. (a la 2017, 2015, 2013)

The funny thing is, a few years ago they took all packages like this away and said that it was to be 'fair' to all fans. Now they're back. LOL...

Interesting to know that they're at C2E2 as well. I'm a little surprised that they are announcing them for ECCC less than 48 hours before the sale, though.

I think that's how the C2E2 announcement went too. Ticket sales were announced about a week in advance but I'm not sure they actually said anything about the different packages. The email I received on the 27th (date of sale) mentioned them but I think that was it.

I entered the queue right at 12 and that one's still running...however I clicked on the link on their Facebook post, and that let me in right away.

This is the first time in years that 4-day badges didn't sell out in 5 minutes. I wonder if they're offering more 4-day badges for sale OR there just aren't that many people interested anymore... Still, I got my badge!

Also, this year the 4-day discount wasn't quite as good as last year. This year you save $27 vs. $47 from last year -- still decent and definitely worth it if you go all 4 days, but last year it was pretty much worth it to get a 4 day even if you only went 3 days. This year, the reduction is probably just barely enough to not be worth it if you go less than 4 days.

Also...I'm going to complain about the hotel prices again.

I haven't gone in the last couple of years, but weren't hotels typically in the $150 per night range? I took a peek and they were around $180ish. It's a bargain compared to SDCC, but still...

The waiting room was slow going at first, but once the premium packages were gone it sped up dramatically. There was definitely a lot of demand for those premium packages.

Yes...and when I started going in 2012 they were in the 100 range for most of them, with some as low as 61-65 for ones that were basic but not sketchy. Last year is when I noticed a big jump up to 170-190. My main issue with that (other than not wanting pay more) is that block hotels are no longer a good deal compared to off-block hotels. Heck, last year the week before ECCC I noticed that some of the travel deal sites were offering the Hyatt Regency (179 on the block last year) for 134-149 during ECCC dates.

Update... and they're gone. Guess it was a blip.

The explanation that ECCC provided on the Facebook page was that people, scalper bots I'm guessing, were holding multiple tickets in their cart (for whatever reason) and when the timer expired, they were released back into the pool. That's why it showed that 4-day badges were initially sold out and then not sold out when you refreshed. Still, 4-day badges lasted much longer this time around than in previous years. A couple of years ago, I logged in right at noon and couldn't get a consolidated badge.

The cart timer is only 15 minutes, so given that they first appeared as sold out at 12:30, there should have been nothing left by 12:45. I did see a few 4-day badges come back in stock after 12:30, but it was brief. I was just surprised to se 6 available at nearly 1 pm!

Yes, 4-day badges have sold out at about the 10 minute mark for the past few years, but I'm wondering if perhaps this year there were more of them. Maybe ReedPop allocated more 4-day badges and fewer single-day badges? We don't actually know for sure right now, but that might be a good question at Talkback this year!

ETA:  I just looked at the Facebook comments and there ECCC admitted that they converted a lot of single-day badges to 4-day badges this year. That explains the longer sellout time.

Previous hotels I've stayed at for ECCC (w/ price per night):

2012: 6th Avenue Inn, $61 (demolished)
2013: Best Western Executive Inn, $65
2014: The Paramount, $117
2015: Crowne Plaza (Sea-Tac Airport), $99
2016: Crowne Plaza (Seattle), $118
2017: Hotel Max, $141
2018: Hyatt Place, $123 (off-block)
2019: Hyatt Regency, $179

As recently as 2016 the Crowne Plaza was $118...for 2020 it's $177, meaning it has gone up 50% in 4 years. The Paramount doesn't even participate in the block anymore. Hyatt Regency, while nice, was not really worth $179/night (although it was kind of cool when I walked into the elevator and saw George Takei.) Most likely I'll go off-block this year...for the most part prices are in line with the block hotels, and much bigger selection.

Saturday running low, but still available 3 weeks later. The last time Saturday took this long to sell out was 2016, when it lasted about a month.

Make that 4 weeks. I think the lack of a major, A-list star is the reason. If someone big was announced, more people would get off the sidelines.

ReedPop hasn't been getting top-tier, headlining guests for their last few shows, and this is encompassing NYCC and C2E2.

6 weeks now (and Saturday tickets have been "almost gone" for 3 weeks.) Slowest Saturday sell out by far since 2015...looks like more people than just me think this con is losing its luster.

I am surprised that Saturday has been more than 90% gone for this many weeks. You may be right about the guest announcements, although I would think that Matt Smith would have brought people in.

ECCC has always been a blend of out-of-towners and locals. Both groups behave very differently with respect to ticket sales. It seems as if the out-of-towners once again snapped up the multi-day badges, but  the locals are being slower to buy the single day badges.
Title: Re: ECCC 2020: March 12-15, 2020

Matt Smith is only appearing Thursday and Friday, though. That’s if he even shows up. When he was announced on the FB page, most of the comments referenced that he has cancelled twice. Hopefully third time will be a charm.

Yeah, if I were local to ECCC I’d no longer buy badges until the schedule is released. (Same reason why I’m waiting on SVCC.) I don’t trust the programming schedule to have enough good panels anymore to fill up my days. Really sad that RP keeps on taking this con more backward than forward in terms of guests and panels. But since it involves planning a trip that I have to take time off and make other arrangements for, I have to decide whether I go or not when everything is still available. For me it’s really just tradition, left over goodwill from the 2012-2015 era and liking Seattle that are keeping me going to ECCC. At some point that may no longer be enough, especially with the hotels no longer being a good deal.

This year's app is available now too and seems to be running fine. I'll give them props for this, considering that last year's was buggy pretty much up until the con.

The panel lineup is probably far from complete (almost nothing listed yet on the Main Stage, for instance), but so far the Into the Spider-Verse Animation panel sticks out. I'm assuming it's the same/similar one I saw at WonderCon last year, but it's nice to see more "official" type panels. Titmouse Animation doesn't show up yet, but they've had it the past few years so hopefully they plug it in before the con.

Ok, I'm legitimately impressed. The Full Back to the Future Reunion has been announced:

https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/events/back-to-the-future-stars-including-michael-j-fox-and-christopher-lloyd-to-reunite-at-emerald-city-comic-con/

Looks like the Panel will be a separately ticketed after-hours event with prices starting at $20. This is similar to when Silicon Valley CC had the same reunion a few years back (sans Tom Wilson, though he did show up the next year) and charged an extra $10. For something like this, I don't mind the minimal fee to guarantee a seat.

Meh, I don't like the idea of ticketed panels on top of the convention so I never do it.  There is enough for me to do.

Tickets to the Back to the Future panel are available (as well as photo-ops.) Looks like 67 tickets left at the $20 level. More at the $59 and $159 ones, which I think are overpriced.

Also...Chyler Leigh has been announced, but they haven't added her panel yet BUT they added Mark Ruffalo's who was announced later. Could they be waiting to add the panel with Chyler Leigh until they get a certain other guest (who was originally supposed to show up in 2016 with her, but they both cancelled that year)?

They still owe us Melissa Benoist. I'm still bent about her cancelling on the last day several years ago. Meeting her was a main reason why I attended that show. I'm hoping that ECCC can work that deal out in the home stretch.

I also hope that they can add some more of "The Boys" cast.

If they do end up getting Melissa Benoist, then I will officially consider this the year that ECCC/ReedPop turns things around. I remember being at the airport the day before ECCC 2016 just about to hop on the plane to Seattle, and we got the announcement that she cancelled. Then Chyler Leigh cancelled right afterwards. The lineup that year was already weak to begin with, and then the biggest draws (IMO) cancel the day before.

Ok, badges bought, last minute plane ticket purchased, hotel reservation made, Ruffalo and Karen Gillan auto tickets purchased.  But does anyone have an extra of the cheap ticket to the BttF panel?  By the time Lyte confirmed I had a ticket, the cheap seats were sold out.

I also bought Mark Ruffalo & Karen Gillan auto tickets. Have a poster to get signed by both but looking elsewhere if there's something better.

FiGPiN at Emerald City Comic Con 2020!

We'll be back for our hometown show, Emerald City Comic Con, March 12-15, 2020 at the Washington State Convention Center!

You'll find us on the floor at booth #829!

Our exclusive announcements will begin soon, but here's what you need to know now!

FiGPiN is participating in ECCC’s pre-show drawing for access to our booth.

The drawing process will open at 12:00 PM PST on Monday, February 3 and close at 11:59 PM PT on Sunday, February 16 at 11:59 PM PT. All winners will be notified by Friday, February 21 by the ECCC team.

DO NOT RUSH THROUGH ENTERING THE DRAWING. Entering early will not increase your chances of receiving a time slot. Take your time and make sure that you're entering everything correctly.

If you’re not selected via the pre-show drawing, you will still have a chance at getting access to our booth!

We will be using a virtual reservation system to sell the rest of our exclusives after the pre-determined drawing sessions are completed. Head straight to our booth in the morning, tap your badge, and select the next available session (or the one you'd like to come back for) and you'll reserve your place in line. While we anticipate some inventory will remain for these sessions, please be aware items will sell out. Having a reservation does not guarantee you any specific item. There is a chance that everything will be sold out before your turn.

If you are selected as a pre-show drawing winner, congratulations! We expect our exclusives to last through these morning sessions, but please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that you will get everything on your wish list.

Exclusives will be restocked each day of the con, but not between sessions.

Please note that ADA attendees must also go through this system to gain access to our booth.

For more information, please visit ECCC: EmCity2020.com/FiGPiN

As always, stay tuned to @FiGPiNofficial on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook for our latest news and updates.

figpinofficial Due to the coronavirus outbreak, our factories have not been able to reopen after Lunar New Year, and will continue to be closed for an undetermined amount of time.

This means that all FiGPiN Emerald City Comic Con exclusives are delayed and won’t arrive in time for the show. We are handling this situation by selling our exclusives at the show on a pre-sale basis. Everything at our booth will work just like normal - but we will ship everything to the address you provide, at no extra charge!

Our main concern is the health and safety of not only our partners in China, but anyone affected by coronavirus. We ask for your patience as we await notice that it is safe for our partners to return to work.

Some observations about the schedule:

There are a few entries that looks like studio panels on the surface; however, in most cases they're doing the bare minimum, just like the ones they had last year. For instance:

Blizzard Presents/DreamWorks She-Ra/FX's Devs -- all of these only have one person on the panel. DreamWorks Kipo & the Wonderbeasts looks a bit better, with 3 people. But no actors/actresses for any of the shows.

AMC's TWD: World Beyond - screening only, no panel.

However, the one that actually does look legit is the Into the Spider-Verse animation panel. Yay for Titmouse Animation coming back, too.

I also see Syfy Wire's Looking for Leia and Khonjin House: The Movie. These resemble the indie screenings they used to have years ago at ECCC, but that haven't seen much of recently.

No Twisted Toonz this year. This was confirmed by ECCC.

They kept away the music content, but it looks like they added a lot of dance panels. I suppose that's someone's cup of tea but not mine.

Still time to add a few more.

At least the guest list this year is good. There seem to be fewer than usual cancellations (I think only one of the voice actors so far), let's hope it stays that way.

Melissa Benoist is the queen of con cancellations, not to mention last minute cancellations. I remember a few years ago she (along with Chris Wood) cancelled the Heroes and Villains con in London a few days before the con itself but luckily almost everyone else showed up. She was also scheduled for the HV Nashville con a couple of months later but backed out last minute-- I think this con she had a real excuse, she had to shoot scenes for Supergirl that weekend. But anyhow she cancels so many cons that it's a shock to her fans when she does show up. Basically I wouldn't book any nonrefundable travel plans to see her if she's the only guest you want to see at a con.

They only recently posted pictures of what the badges look like. I am wondering if they had some kind of printing issue.

ReedPop has issued an official statement regarding Coronavirus:

Quote
Hey everyone,

We know ECCC means a lot to a lot of people. Many of us and you have been looking forward to ECCC for a year now, and we will always want the best for this community that we have grown to love so much.

ECCC 2020 will take place as scheduled March 12th-15th at the Washington State Convention Center (WSCC) in downtown Seattle. We have implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitization across the show, including adhering to the recommendations set forth in the U.S. EPA’s Emerging Pathogen Policy regarding cleaning disinfectants effective against the COVID-19 virus. We are working closely with the WSCC and our other venue partners and aligning with local, state and federal public health guidelines and agencies. As ECCC approaches we will be constantly reviewing our health protection activities, public health messaging, hygiene and medical control measures with the aim of strengthening our COVID-19 response further in line with up to date public health advice and guidance, including that of the CDC.  For more information about COVID-19 and response of the WSCC, the State of Washington and the city of Seattle, please refer to our website.

We want to express our concern for everyone impacted by the COVID-19 virus. The well-being of our global Reedpop community, from our fans and exhibitors to our staff on-site at every show - is of the utmost importance to Reedpop and we take pride in creating a positive environment to celebrate comics, cosplay and pop culture.

We are looking forward to four days of fun and we can’t wait to see you.

The first sentence made me worry, but they aren’t cancelling (at this time, anyway.)

My thoughts: ReedPop is not going to cancel this unless they are forced to. They would lose way too much money. The risk of cancellation depends entirely on whether or not King County (or the CDC) enacts a suspension of large events. The cases at this point are high-risk and fairly limited, but it’s very possible things could escalate in the next week and a half.

However, it’s more possible that some of the guests and/or exhibitors may pull out (in particular ones with health problems such as Michael J. Fox), as well as lower attendance.

Every store I went to today is sold out of hand sanitizer.  I hope they restock before my trip.

I can tell you I wouldn't want to do a photo op right now, but this is how a lot make a living.  Don't be shocked if your autograph and handshake involves a plastic glove.

I'm a hand sanitizer fiend, so I always have plenty of it around.  2 weeks ago, I noticed that a few stores were out so when they restocked I stocked up.  I'm good for the duration.

Have you seen pictures of the long lines at Costco today?  I went to Costco yesterday and it was busier than normal.  There was definitely a bit of anxiety in the air.  A lot of carts had stacks of water.

I agree about Christopher Lloyd, high probability he cancels. So much for the BTTF centerpiece.

Re: GDC part 2...maybe, maybe not. Most of the cancellations at GDC were major sponsors/presenters and global companies. ECCC doesn’t really have those. This is something I’ve long complained about ECCC for not having, but this year it’s probably a good thing they don’t.

If it gets so bad that the water turns off, I think we'll have more important things to worry about than covid.  Being a Californian, I always have water and food to last a while.  They drilled that into us since kindergarten.  I was in yesterday stocking up on Kleenex.  It was the last day of the sale.

The rotisserie chicken is tasty and cheap.  It's a good Sunday dinner. :)

Sorry. :P

Sorry about Matt Smith. I haven't kept up with his statistics but I find that he seems to show up more than she does, heh... I still consider myself to be a big fan of Benoist despite her multiple cancellations but I find that it's best not to spend too much nonrefundable money on trips for her convention appearances unless there are other celebs you want to see at the same con. Like I don't expect her to ever show up at ECCC sadly. She seems to not like to show up at cons during the weeks that she works and ECCC takes place during her filming season. She's booked for a con in the UK in the spring after Supergirl filming ends. We'll see if she shows up for that one.

I don't understand that either. I read that people were stocking up on toilet paper too which confused me. If people do get sick, why not stock up on Kleenex instead? As far as I know, people who get infected usually have respiratory symptoms, not digestive symptoms... As for the water bottles, I do think it makes sense to load up on water. When I get sick I try to drink as much hot water as possible. What I don't understand is why buy up small bottles of water when you can load up on the big gallon bottles of water instead for a better price (and less environmentally wasteful). There's no need to use travel size water bottles when you're just drinking it at home.

Costco doesn’t have the big gallons. I’m not sure whether the bulk small ones there end up being cheaper per Oz than the big ones elsewhere (it’s fairly easy to find the gallons for $1 each), but I hate small bottles enough to not bother calculating, so I just buy my water at not-Costco.

I wouldn't do that considering that people are taught to cough and sneeze into their elbows. ;)

As far as I know, people who get infected usually have respiratory symptoms, not digestive symptoms...

Covid is lower respiratory, not upper respiratory like the flu or the cold.  So excessive mucus production is not as common and thus lower incidence of runny nose, sneezing or sore throat.  A cough and shortness of breath are more common symptoms.

The comparison wasn’t about that, it was about GDC releasing a statement last week saying that the event was still on before announcing the postponement of the conference, due to the reason you listed above. The event managers were ‘forced’ to change their minds. It sure feels like ReedPop may be facing the same thing with ECCC after releasing a statement yesterday, still a likelihood of being ‘forced’ to cancel/postpone the con if Washington state recommends canceling all large events this month. So far, there's a good chance that ECCC 2020 may not happen next week.

Actually...

ECCC tweeted yesterday, asking people what they were packing to bring to the show. And they received this response today.

So it looks like they are okay with the show going on, but just posting cautionary advice.

At C2E2 there were signs posted by some of the celebs asking people not to engage in shaking hands or hugs when taking a photo with the celeb and for their understanding as to why it wasn't allowed.  Not every celeb had those signs, but I saw more than one and suspect you'll see many of the same signs posted at ECCC.

I also saw one person come out prior to a celeb appearance and carefully wipe down the chairs and table with a sanitizer.  Not a bad practice, but still suspect its the kind of thing we'll see a lot more of this year.  Have to admit I used my own hand sanitizer and wipes more frequently this time around.

That should be posted, so that's good to see! Hopefully, it means good news for you all, but during today’s press conference in Washington state, it was stated again that local health officials are still thinking about recommending that large gatherings be canceled or postponed for now. Currently, this idea is being seen as a negative, though...for now. Local leaders aren't pleased that the number of confirmed cases keeps going up, obviously.

Should people in Washington also have a ton of water in food in case of a large earthquake, too? Hopefully even if they're okay from the virus they keep it as emergency backup.

Yeah true about Costco but I usually get my big water bottles at Target and even the Dollar Stores have Crystal Geiser for $1 each. I think each water bottle have a CRV fee in California (5 cents for small size, 10 cents for big size), so a 24 pack of small water bottles would automatically add an extra dollar to the price.

From what I read, COVID-19 can be either upper respiratory or lower or both. There's been discussion of people having mild symptoms with the disease, with some of them originally think they just have a regular flu or cold. It's probably also why the disease isn't as fatal as originally thought too. Here's a CDC article that discusses 2 pts from that infected Japanese ship:

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/6/20-0452_article

The reason that people with it in the upper respiratory system have mild to no symptoms is because it's a lower respiratory illness.  It doesn't replicate well up there.

Here is a Lancet article regarding covid.

"COVID-19 also has affinity for cells in the lower respiratory tract and can replicate there, causing radiological evidence of lower respiratory tract lesions in patients who do not present with clinical pneumonia."

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30374-3/fulltext?rss%3Dyes#bib8

Also, both the CDC and WHO recommend testing samples from the lower respiratory tract.  Initially testing can be done on the upper respiratory tract since getting a sample from the lower tract is harder.

As per the CDC, the criteria for testing is people with lower respiratory illness.

"Health care providers should contact their local/state health department immediately to notify them of patients with fever and lower respiratory illness who live in or have recently traveled to an affected area with sustained transmission or have been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 patient."

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/lab/guidelines-clinical-specimens.html

Guidance from the WHO is to test samples from the lower respiratory tract.  Test samples from the upper tract if you can't get it from the lower.

"Lower respiratory specimens likely have a higher diagnostic value than upper respiratory tract specimens for detecting COVID-19 infection. WHO recommends that, if possible, lower respiratory specimens such as sputum, endotracheal aspirate, or bronchoalveolar lavage be collected for COVID-19 testing. If patients do not have signs or symptoms of lower respiratory tract disease or specimen collection for lower respiratory tract disease is clinically indicated but the collection is not possible, upper respiratory tract specimens, such as a nasopharyngeal aspirate or combined nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs should be collected."

Gotcha. But in any case, it looks like this is has started to happen. :-/ Dark Horse has pulled out, which was one of the most recognizable exhibitors. Others may follow. If so, the one that would indicate that the whole con is done is Funko.

I am expecting more will pull out from going now. Stinks, but the confirmed cases keep going up over there in Seattle. Regardless, let’s see what Funko does. I am curious about what they will do.

Not to be alarmist, in fact I'm trying to quell any undue alarm.  Expect one day to wake up and find there to be a large jump in confirmed cases in the US.  It's not because there are suddenly many more people infected, those people are already infected.  It's because we haven't been testing.  We are far behind the curve.  Little South Korea tests 15,000 people a day.  On a good day, we test a few hundred in the US.  We don't have the capability.  Even residents that want to get tested in that Nursing Home that's ground zero in Kirkland can't get tested.  In South Korea, they offer drive thru testing for anyone who wants it.  Instead of taking hours or days to get the results here, they get the results in minutes in Korea.

Once we get up to speed and test like other countries do, I think we'll find that we have many more than 100+ or so people infected in the US.  Many more.

I agree with this. I have seen people post that they have symptoms of coronavirus, but have been refused testing because they don't meet the criteria. Also, the reason for the sudden surge in reported cases is that states have been given the ability to test (it was only done on a federal level before). But I just read that they are lifting all restrictions, so that large jump could be coming soon: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/03/world/coronavirus-live-news-updates.html

Also...the death toll has been upped to 9, including two who had died before the first "official" death (and were both residents of the same nursing home that was ground zero), but they determined posthumously that they were from coronavirus. So it's very possible/almost certain that the US has already had many other deaths from coronavirus, they just weren't diagnosed.

Hotel prices have started dropping like a rock. The Hyatt Regency ($185 on the block) is now $142 night if you book direct or $135 with a AAA membership. (48 hours cancellation which I believe is the same as the con block)

The Hilton I think was $174 con rate, but booking direct is $125 w/ 3 days cancellation or $120 w/ 5 days.

Crowne Plaza, $177 con rate, is $146 with a 24-hours refundable AAA rate and even cheaper (as low as 136) with a non-refundable rate.

It was 37 cancellations late last night when I checked on the FB ECCC page and it's now at 47. Once the headliners and main guests start to pull out, it's a wrap... and knowing ReedPop, they won't let us know until a day or two before the con.

I wonder if ECCC is considering postponing the show until the late Summer or Fall when this epidemic has passed. As of now, there are just too many unknowns about the virus, like the ever-changing incubation period.

I doubt it. It all comes down to if the convention center has any dates open. Plus you don't want to run into overlapping issues with events like HerosCon or NYCC.

They run NYCC so I doubt they could handle two at the same time.  They actually own a lot of convention and I am sure that would make it even harder.  they need it to occur when the convention center is open and they have the staffing and resources.

I feel bad for all the people who are going to lose a paycheck because of this.  Already working for min. wage, a lot probably live paycheck to paycheck, and now they will lose hours.

I am going as long as the con is still happening. I promised DrWho42 that I would cover the con for the FoCC Blog, even if it means wandering around taking pictures of an empty exhibit floor. ;)

What I would like is for ECCC to make a public statement about their intentions. If they plan to cancel, just cancel. If they intend to keep going no matter what (barring government shutdown) then announce that. If celebrity guests have canceled, then announce that. if all celebrity guests are intact, announce that too.

It's the not knowing/limbo that is killing me!

My uninformed guess is that they are waiting for the government to shut them down so they can collect insurance money (a voluntary cancellation may not allow them to file a claim) - but I would like them to decide sooner or later.  Can't imagine any of the celebrity talent will want to attend next week.

I believe your assessment is correct. Unfortunately, it is clear that there are way more cases that the health authorities have not identified. It is puzzling to me that they have not canceled the event with all of the deaths in the surrounding area and especially with the infected Amazon employee.

One thing I’ve learned is that if an entertainment guest cancels, they get taken off of the Epic site before there’s an announcement by the con.  So I keep refreshing the epic site to see if there are any disappearances.

My uninformed guess is that they are waiting for the government to shut them down so they can collect insurance money (a voluntary cancellation may not allow them to file a claim) - but I would like them to decide sooner or later.  Can't imagine any of the celebrity talent will want to attend next week.

They discussed this exact thing on the news today.  That even if a company has insurance for these types of black swan events, that if they cancel voluntarily that the policy may not pay.

Also, checking the panel schedule may clue you in to who dropped out. The Jim Lee panel is gone (and people have been saying he officially pulled out.) Both of the Dreamworks property panels are gone too.

This next part is entirely speculation, as I don't know the exact cancellation policies, but at this point it's a waiting game between ReedPop and the city/state, and it entirely hinges on what the city/state decides. If ReedPop cancels, they probably will still owe money to the city for the convention center and elsewhere. They didn't want to offer refunds, but had no choice when the major booths started pulling out. At that point it was no longer the show a lot of people went for, and forcing no refunds would have damaged their reputation...but even if half the people choose to get a refund but the show goes on, then they'll make some money which is better than no money.

Whereas if the city forces ECCC to cancel, the city would have to refund them. The city probably doesn't want to do that, either...they'd would lose a lot of money, not just convention center rent but all the hotels/other spending that attendees would no longer do. However, once coronavirus gets past a certain point, the government would have a responsibility to publicly take action -- whereas ReedPop has no such responsibility. But if that does happen, I just hope it isn't while I'm on my way up...

If you're on Instagram, Twitter or any other social media outlet, that would be a quicker, more reliable method of receiving updates regarding cancellations. Can't really depend on ReedPop to keep us in the loop, at least punctually.

I feel the same way. Honestly, this thing is so virulent that I’m pretty sure that my family and I will get it anyway. I just want to enjoy myself until that happens. I don’t put my life on hold for fear of regular flu, or an earthquake, or any other disaster. I’ll just deal with it as it comes. It’s these cancelations and the risk of quarantine that stress me out.

Isn’t Funko based in Seattle?  They may figure they’re not at much more risk going to the con.
I fund it weird that none of the entertainment guests have said they’re canceling.  If the ones I want to see decided to cancel, I would just cut my losses and not go.

Everett, Washington, so close enough. Overall, they could be thinking that and (apparently) they are planning on going still...for now. As for the actors, I don’t know...Money? Paper work?

Everett is where the first US coronavirus case was. I've also noticed that none of the cancellations have been entertainment guests either. Some have even specifically said they are still attending (i.e. Rachel Skarsten, Boys cast). Perhaps they don't want to cancel for the same reason why ReedPop doesn't want to cancel ECCC...too much $$$ at stake if they cancel before they're forced to.

Our fans are central to all Reedpop decisions, and always will be. We value all of your voices and the spectrum of feedback that we have been receiving. We know that there are a number of fans in Seattle that remain excited to safely gather and celebrate their fandom and we are dedicated to building a fun, safe con experience for them even during these difficult times. However, knowing that no two fans are alike, we have decided to make an exception to our no refunds ticket policy for our fans who are either unable or uncomfortable attending Emerald City Comic Con in light of current events.

Know that we are following the enhanced cleaning guidelines, precautions and procedures that we recently deployed at our PAX East event in Boston and C2E2 in Chicago. We also insist that all fans, guests and exhibitors adhere to good sense and all protocols as suggested by the CDC. We are fully prepared to adjust our plans as the situation in and around Seattle develops. We intend to follow all city, state and federal guidelines. If the direction from official public health authorities does change between now and the show, we will adhere to that guidance.

We want to express our concern for everyone impacted by the COVID-19 virus. The well-being of our global Reedpop community, from our fans and exhibitors to our staff on-site at every show is of the utmost importance to Reedpop and we take pride in creating a positive environment to celebrate comics, cosplay and pop culture.

Please fill out the form below to begin the refund process.

In regards to any merchandise purchases: If merchandise was purchased after the ticket mailing deadline for onsite pick up, we will either refund the merchandise or ship it to you post ECCC, free of charge. If merchandise has already been shipped, we will not be able to provide a refund.

Actually, if the Boys cast is going, I find that reassuring.  Karl and one of the others had commitments so they changed days, so I assume they still have filming going on or something.  The studio could have told them not to go because of the virus, and they could cleanly cancel.

I don't want to be Mr. Negativity, but I would be shocked if Karl didn't cancel at some point. Dude is a HUGE germophobe. I met him at DragonCon for a signing and he wouldn't shake my hand when I reached out. He only did quick fist bumps.

Regarding the celebs cancelling, I find it hard to believe that none of them have cancelled with first- the news of the outbreaks and; the almost mass exodus of talent/booths. The number of cancellations are up to 50. I think ReedPop knows who cancelled, but is withholding that information so people don't panic and request refunds all at once.

I wonder if entertainment guests haven’t canceled because they’ll be more contained.  Don’t have to go outside to get around the con.  Can do no touching at photo ops.  Handlers handle all the auto items.  Basically treat them all like Stan Lee in his 90s.  And the celebs are probably staying at the Hyatt too.

I’m not afraid of getting sick, I’m afraid of being quarantined!

Our government is not doing a good job of preparing people for what to expect.  People think that the crisis period will only be 2 weeks.  Is flu season only 2 weeks?  Has Wuhan been locked down for only 2 weeks?  The UK is doing a much better job.  Not only have they published their plan, but they have told people to expect 12 weeks of measures once the plan is enacted.

I think that ECCC is waiting for the governor or CDC to make the decision so that their insurance policy will kick in, if they cancel it on their own, insurance won’t cover anything. That’s just my opinion.

If you're trying to keep up with cancellations, be aware that the ECCC website isn't up to date. Christian Ward just sent out a tweet reminding everyone he isn't going anymore, even though he's still listed on the site. The best way to know what's up is to check the social media of the artists/guests directly.

Yes, until they start testing more than just the people who have traveled to affected countries, they won’t get an accurate count. Community transfer of the disease has been going on for weeks.

The Bay Area has the next most # of coronavirus case after Seattle (and its numbers are most likely way underreported too), it’s already here and I am not any more worried about getting it there than here. I’d be more worried about getting stuck/quarantined, or that if the con isn’t canceled by the time I leave, that it gets canceled during my flight, or even halfway through the con.

At this juncture, I think ReedPop should do the right thing and postpone this show. Currently, there are 85 cancellations according to this:

https://www.notion.so/9d49bba6f99a455db7693951aeae99fc?v=6600f3b6457d4cf083ff6b20b0796140

It was at 50 last night... not to mention the celebs who haven't announced that they're backing out, so there won't be much of a convention remaining. Imagine how the exhibitor hall would look without 85 populated booths.

I was really looking forward to this show and purchased funko pops, comic books and sketch cover variants for signings, but I would rather attend a show that's at full-strength than at 40%. While it was a nice gesture from ReedPop to offer refunds for fans and exhibitors, I would be extremely upset if it was announced that the show was cancelled while I was in transit. I'd be stuck with the hotel, shuttle and flight costs. With the mass exodus of talent and exhibitors, I hope ReedPop makes a quick decision in consideration of saving their fans money and heartache.

Actually it was 70 last night, you must go to bed before me :)

I think even that person is having problems keeping up with the cancellations.

My fears are there is nothing to see, the panels I want not happening, and then getting stuck in the city with all restaurants closed.  I'll probably bring my work laptop so I can at least get paid if that happened.

At this juncture, I think ReedPop should do the right thing and postpone this show. Currently, there are 85 cancellations
It looks like most of them are individual artist alley peeps. As someone who only takes a quick peek and walkthrough that's not a big deal for me. Plus for me this is a time to get away and hang out with friends .... who at this point are all still coming. So my fingers crossed ECCC does NOT cancel!

At least Reedpop is offering refunds, SXSW is also just a shell of a convention now with nearly all major companies canceling or about to cancel. But SXSW refuses to offer any refunds or refund hotel bookings made through their booking system. Their email response is their refund terms : SXSW does not issue refunds under any circumstances. Any and all payments made to SXSW are not refundable for any reason, including, without limitation, failure to use Credentials due to illness, acts of God, travel-related problems, acts of terrorism, loss of employment and/or duplicate purchases.

That is my personal concern too.

The health and safety of both our own teams and our trading partners are of utmost concern to us. So, we have made the difficult decision to cancel both Gentle Giant, Ltd. and Diamond Select Toys’ attendance at Emerald City Comic-Con. We appreciate the efforts of the Reedpop team and the state and local authorities they’re working with, and hope that the show is successful for them, their exhibitors, and the many fans who look forward to the show each year.

I can’t afford to take any illness home because I have an elderly mother who fits the criteria for the most vulnerable to the disease.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I've tried making that exact point.  I wish the government would do something to drive that point home.  Up in Washington State they are recommending that people 60 and over self isolate.  In their words people over 60 and pregnant women should "stay home".  But they don't say that anyone with someone over 60 at home should stay home.  Since there's no point in someone 60 staying home if the people they are living with don't do the same.  The New York case has proven over and over and over again that if one person gets it in the house, everyone will.  That one person has been linked to 11 people getting sick by yesterday's count.  He infected his own family and the people he infected, infected all the members of their families.

Infectious diseases aren't just about you, they are about all the people you can infect.  So if you are living with your parents or grandparents, while you maybe 20 and can shake off covid with no problems, the older people in the house won't fair as well.

Unfortunately, we aren't China or even Japan or Korea.  Americans will not put up with the needed measures.  Many people even think this is a "hoax".  Just look at the stunt that happened the other day on the floor of congress.

Here is one example.  At a popular chicken chain in China, people normally wear masks and gloves.  Now they no longer take dirty cash and prefer that people order with their phones.  If they don't and use the self order kiosk, a worker disinfects that kiosk after each customer.  Here in the US at the same chicken chain, the person who takes your money gets your food.  No mask, no glove, no handwashing and not even a squirt of hand sanitizer.

China got a lot of criticism for it's lockdown a month ago.  It wasn't just in Wuhan, the streets of Beijing and Shanghai were also deserted.  Now with hindsight, they did the right thing.  Not just for China but for the world.  They bought us time.  Some used that time wisely.  Others did not.

Dr. Chris Spitters with Snohomish Health ... encouraged residents to avoid non-essential gatherings with large groups of 50 or more people. “The larger the group, the higher the risk,” Spitters said.

More importantly:

Epidemiologist Dr. Eric Ding spoke with KIRO Radio’s Gee and Ursula Show, stressing the need for massively increased safety measures in Washington state. “I think the Seattle area in Washington state is potentially on the cusp of being a Wuhan 2.0,” he cautioned. Ding went on to note that the possibility of shutting down large events like Emerald City Comic Con in downtown Seattle should be something under “urgent consideration.”

Looks like it is ‘strongly encouraged’ to cancel big events from health officials. I guess it’s almost at required?

Well, they got one new exhibitor.

Since CGC pulled out (and apparently had an exclusive contract with ReedPop), that opened the door for another comic grading service such as CBCS.

While most of the major exhibitors have pulled out (which was a relatively low number to begin with, though there will be noticeable big gaps on the floor) the remaining list is still pretty huge. Of course, a lot can change by next week including the entire thing possibly getting cancelled, but at this point it would still be a pretty decent show.

I'm also assuming the Back to the Future Panel isn't happening, even though that hasn't been announced yet. Aside from that, most of what I was mainly interested in is still (at this point) a go:

Exhibitors
Funko
Popminded by Hallmark
Tokidoki
Space Needle LLC

Guest Panels
Mark Ruffalo
Umbrella Academy
Boys

Non-Spotlight Panels
Chillin With Voice Actors
FX's Devs Sneak Peek
Where No Man Has Gone Before
Queens of Adventure Live
Titmouse pt. 1
Titmouse pt. 2
AMC's World Beyond (I complained about screenings that weren't full panels last year, but that turned out to be a good thing this year...unless they cancel this screening anyway, in which case I'm going to roll my eyes so hard)

Panels gone that are a disappointments:
Spiderverse Animation
Kipo and the Wonderbeasts

Vault Regretfully Cancels ECCC 2020 Appearance, Teases Special Virtual Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Missoula, MT (3/6/2020): Vault Comics has announced they will not be exhibiting at Emerald City Comic Con 2020.

For fans everywhere, including those who will miss them at ECCC, Vault is working on a special virtual event that will include creators, limited edition merchandise, and special sales, and will give fans a chance to talk directly to the Vault team.

“I’m sad to say that Vault won’t be exhibiting at Emerald City Comic Convention this year,” said Vault Publisher, Damian Wassel. “It’s our favorite convention and we’ll miss it dearly. We look forward to returning to Seattle in 2021. In lieu of exhibiting at the convention, we’re organizing a virtual event to support our creative teams and engage our readers everywhere. We’ll share more about that soon.”

More information on this special virtual event will be announced in the next few days.

Here we have it!!!

The Mayor says it's up to the county to cancel ECCC

https://comicbook.com/comics/2020/03/06/emerald-city-comic-con-canceled-coronavirus-seattle-jenny-durkan/

The County says it's up to Reedpop:

and Reedpop says they aren't' going to cancel

https://www.emeraldcitycomiccon.com/RNA/RNA_v2Sandbox-5/_never-delete/coronavirus/A-message-from-emerald-city-comic-con.pdf?v=637186798778284510

SO it is up to each individual to decide if going is worth it to them.  Also why most are young remember if you catch it, you have your co-workers, family, and friends to also think about.  My mother is 75 so while I can go with very little risk I have to think about her.

I do understand though he chances are slim and I could still catch it at work, the store, or movie theater here.

And there's still people who are waiting for badges in the mail to begin the return process.

The article does say they're still selling badges at around 500 a day but I'm sure most of those people are local and might wait it out and make a call the day. And no word on if those badges are single day or multi day.

Just announced that ECCC 2020 is postponed.

Quote
Hey ECCC fans,

Each year the Emerald City Comic Con team works their hardest to do right by the thousands of fans that come together in Seattle. We want to create a space for you to gather, be yourselves and make memories with those who matter to you most. We have been closely monitoring the situation around the COVID-19 virus in Seattle, and, after many hours of conversation internally and consultation with local government officials and the tourism bureau, we have decided to move next week's Emerald City Comic Con to Summer 2020 with date and detail announcement forthcoming. We did everything that we could to run the event as planned, but ultimately, we are following the guidance of the local public health officials indicating that conventions should now be postponed.
>> To all of our fans who purchased tickets, you will receive a refund on your tickets, no further action is needed on your part. Due to the volume, we expect you will receive your refund in 30 days. We appreciate your patience and understanding. <<

Our hearts go out to the entire Seattle community, everyone impacted by the COVID-19 virus, and all of you, the nearly 100,000 amazing human beings who look forward to this event each year. Our team was incredibly excited to see you at Emerald City Comic Con next week, however, fans, artists, exhibitors and the rest of the community are what make Reedpop events so special and it is our duty to make sure that your safety comes first.

We know that this decision is going to greatly impact many of our individual creators, small businesses and service workers. To those whose careers depend on ECCC - we will do everything that we can over the coming days and weeks to highlight your work and we ask that our entire community support you as we realize your personal livelihoods may be impacted.

Reedpop remains determined and committed to running Emerald City Comic Con in 2020 and we are working closely with Visit Seattle and the Washington State Convention Center to secure alternate dates this summer. As we explore options for new dates, please know that our priority is to bring you an equally amazing event.

We appreciate all the messages that we have received over the course of the past week. The feedback was invaluable in helping us determine next steps.

Stay tuned to our website and social channels for additional information about when we will next see you in Seattle.

I hope when they reschedule, they take into consideration the other summer convention dates.

Just announced that ECCC 2020 is postponed.

I hope when they reschedule, they take into consideration the other summer convention dates.

They really won't have a choice about it - most exhibitors/studios/celebs/artists won't be able to be in two places at once, and those that can probably won't want to.

Aargh.  I'm disappointed, but not surprised.  My big concern now is what the new date is going to be.  "Summer" is very vague and could easily conflict with other stuff I've got going on then.

I see that one too. The weekend right before SDCC. The only other one that’s completely free on the calendar is is Labor Day, but that’s usually when PAX is (though I haven’t found confirmation of PAX’s dates yet.) Another possibility is they have it at the same time as something else, as many of the other conferences listed are very small.

And? I don't think something like being on a different coast really matters. DragonCon is a HUGE convention that brings in a lot of similar guests and cosplayers. I know a lot of people who attend both ECCC and DC.

I think there's a decent possibility that it won't be rescheduled. They are refunding everyone's badges, and there is no option to transfer them over to a postponed date.

I agree.  Setting up a large convention is not something that happens overnight.  They probably plan it out a year in advance.  People plan for it in advance with vacation time, travel and lodging.  Even if they postpone until later in the year, I doubt they will get as many attendees.  Unless the City of Seattle offers some sort of sweetener, it may not be worth it for them.  It's a business after all.

I think it totally matters, unless it is something on the scale of SDCC. Per a ReedPop press release, 75% of the attendees at ECCC are from Washington state. (This is consistent with other ECCC-sized conventions.) They didn't break down the rest, but based on what I've gathered, it's largely a west coast affair. Yes, with 100,000 attendees there are people from other states, but even if it were, say 5000...that's still only 5%. There are also plenty of guests and cosplayers to go around for both conventions.

I think there's a decent possibility that it won't be rescheduled. They are refunding everyone's badges, and there is no option to transfer them over to a postponed date.

Sadly, I think you're right. I don't think they can realistically reschedule until they're sure that coronavirus is under control, which may not even be until the summer or later. Add to that, there are already very few dates that are free.

Exactly. While I think City of Seattle probably will offer some sort of sweetener because it pumps $$$ into the economy, I still am not counting on it happening for all the other reasons. If it does happen, it won't be the same con that they originally planned. I don't expect it to be any bigger than it would have been at the time it was pulled, but they might be able to get back some of the main exhibitors such as Dark Horse.

Anyway...if it doesn't happen this year, I might not be so gung-ho about going in the future. One of the main reasons I went every year was to keep my streak alive.

That would be a reason to reschedule.  You would lose attendees.

I know this is a somewhat odd question, but did anyone even receive their badges for ECCC yet? They just announced the decision to cancel today but the first day was supposed to be March 12. What if this wasn't a year with COVID-19? Would badges have arrived in time for attendees to bring to ECCC?

Got mine too. The response to people who have asked ReedPop is to let them know you had not received your badge and pick it up at will call.

They really won't have a choice about it - most exhibitors/studios/celebs/artists won't be able to be in two places at once, and those that can probably won't want to.

Thursday March 12th

Day two of the virtual convention will boast unboxings of ECCC exclusives with the Funko crew, games and contests, as well as familiar Funko faces from the ECCC booth!

Friday March 13th

All ECCC exclusives will go up for purchase on Funko Shop and the Funko Funkast will be livestreaming from the Funko HQ Lounge in an exclusive Funko Funkast Panel! Link up with fellow Funatics for bad dad jokes, a Q&A session, games, and giveaways. Washington’s governor is going to ban gatherings over 250 people today, so that would have killed ECCC even if they hadn’t postponed.

No, you don’t need to send them back. They will automatically refund everyone.

ECCC is making its return August 21-23, 2020 at the WSCC! We're so excited to pack our show into three unforgettable days this summer.

We know a lot of fans were hoping to transfer over badges to the new dates, so starting today through March 27, you'll have the option to transfer your badges to ECCC August 2020 or receive a full ticket refund. You can read all the details here:

So ECCC is that weekend and the following weekend is Keystone and Celebration — going to be a busy time for Reedpop.

1 week before Celebration. Yeah, won’t even bother thinking on going now.

I am looking forward to these new dates, and summers in Seattle are awesome, I just hope everything is stable by then. I also prefer a 3 day ECCC in its current state. 4 days made it drag on a little too much, in my opinion.

The only thing on the convention calendar during that time was "Washington State Dental Association Academy" on 8/22 with no listed attendance. From looking at their website, it looks like a continuing education class for dentists and there are many of those per year. So probably wasn't hard to move that or hold it somewhere else.

For the first time, I'm also kind of glad that ReedPop took over. I don't think a small, independent organization would have been able to hack out the cancellation and rescheduling of this kind of event so quickly.

The new hotel reservations page has quietly launched. Prices, for the most part, are sky-high. ($174 Hilton/everything else $229-259)

Title: Re: ECCC 2020: March 12-15, 2020
Post by: hikanteki on April 04, 2020, 08:23:31 PM
The official rationale is probably something like summer is a bigger tourist season than spring, so non-block prices are higher as well. However...tourism is probably not going to be back to normal at all this year, so I don’t think these higher prices will be justified. Just like with the original spring dates, these prices are not necessarily better than off-block prices for the same time period and I expect to be able to find much better deals booking directly as we get closer to the con.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that it won’t get canceled again. :-/ That said I think the rescheduled ECCC has as good of odds as any convention to actually pull through this year. But the odds are still not that high, as nobody may be ready to open back up big events this year. But what it does have going for it: Washington dealt with the coronavirus early and is already starting to see cases level off, and August is right in the middle of summer so it’s well before the expected second wave of coronavirus during the fall. Unlike other cities, the convention center is not likely to be used as a hospital or homeless shelter. The layout is just too difficult for that.

They had this one the weekend of 8/22, and both Celebration and Keystone the weekend of 8/29, all of which canceled between yesterday and today.  They probably wanted to be able to cancel them all at once.
