... I feel like the Bay Area could use a con as big as Wondercon.

Wondercon was the Bay Area con.  But it couldn't be held at Moscone one year and went south.  It stayed south.

Yeah, I was so sad about that.

Fun fact, Wondercon used to be at the Marriott in downtown Oakland. It was where I got my first Jim Lee sketch.

There was fault on both sides in that. Moscone wouldn't give WonderCon any dates less than 6 months out, and Anaheim was very welcoming. And I'm sure it was easier for CCI to plan the whole thing closer to home base.

It's interesting that their previously unfortunate delayed timing may help this year's convention be more popular if we're able to control the virus outbreak by the fall. I can see more guests wanting to book with the con due to the cancellations of numerous cons during the spring/summer.

To add to that — had it still been in March, it would have gotten cancelled. Santa Clara county officially cancelled all gatherings of over 1000 people:

Saw that Cinequest is moving the part of its schedule to August, though their website is a bit of a mess.

From an email this morning (Jul 6th)

Quote
Hi SiliCon Nation!

You may have heard that Adam will be giving an update later today about SiliCon's exciting future plans with Adam Savage. Initially, it was going to be a Facebook live event, but due to a change in Adam's schedule, he won't be able to make it. So, Adam will be posting a video later today to share all of our plans and will reschedule the Facebook live event in the coming weeks.

Make sure to visit the website often to watch the video and get all of the updates.

If you purchased badges already, you will be given the choice of a refund or rolling over to next year's con.

I get that they were trying to stay upbeat, and I don't think anyone expected any show this year not to get canceled. But selling the cancelation announcement as "Adam Savage wants to give you something to look forward to, so mark your calendars for Monday, July 6th for a BIG announcement!" just seems kind of...desperate.

Also, it feels a little "desperate" to end the announcement by plugging the online store to buy merchandise for Silicon when there's yet to be the first Silicon.

Adam Savage is selling 2 minute video interactions for $100 a pop. Whee...

Not expecting much from this 'virtual version'.

WOW!  I got the email and didn't even click on the make a reservation link because I thought it was pretty cheesy.  But $100 for a two minute  conversation?
I'm actually at a loss for words to express my feelings about this.

While (in my opinion) indeed exorbitant, that's also nearly the same price as most 2-3 minute conversations sold by ReedPop's Metaverse... (except for Misha Collins, his was like $362  ::) )

20 more reservations for the two minute call were just added due to the "overwhelming response".
