I've noticed really high hotel rates just about everywhere, hoping that CCI can negotiate some reasonable rates for SDCC.
Actually, I think they do.
It's a dance...
For the hotels, this convention is a dream. It's probably the closest they get to full capacity. They charge more than their off-peak rates, but less than they'd like to (ex. $1000/night).
My first year (2015) I missed the hotel sale (long story). I did look at CCI's hotel list, and booked Humphrey's on Shelter Island directly thru the hotel site a month before the Con. They gave me the CCI rate, so there was no problem there. As I was checking in on Wednesday (Preview Night), a couple came in looking for a vacancy. The rate quoted to them was $100/night more than mine (I couldn't help but over hear

). I was a little surprised (inside), but the couple went thru with the reservation without skipping a beat. Looking back on it, they may not have been in San Diego for the Con. It might have been a situation where they had to make a last minute trip to San Diego, probably called around, and my hotel was one of the few with vacancies, and they jumped on it.
It's all what the market will bear.
