SDCC Fundays 2023
« on: April 19, 2023, 10:43:11 AM »
Greetings All!!!

I figured I'd start the 2023 Fundays thread since Hotepocalypse is already underway.
Last years, Mike Becker mentioned that he'd be looking into moving the event to the Rady Shell to accommodate 10,000 people vs the usual 2,000 attendees.
Let's use this thread to host details as they're made public.

I can also update this post as we get more official information.

Cheers!

Update 5/16/2023:
There's a new rewards program that you'll need to sign up for (regardless of having a prior account). On the desktop version of the site, there's a "fan" icon over a crown at the top right.
Once you're signed up, look through all the "earn" options and start earning. You can enter the sweepstakes for fundays with just 100 points.

Update 5/24/2023:
The Funko Funatic forum has an opened a sign up sheet for a random drawing to purchase tickets to fundays.
Criteria is
Be a member by 5/15/2022 (yes, the year prior)
Have 100 posts by 5/15/2023

No new user accounts will be activated until after 6/3/2023

Thats not a fundays link you shared (though yes some people did diverge off that threads topic to discuss fundays).

On that note, I'll keep this open since this can be dedicated to Fundays 2023. Thanks for the help!

I am thinking that they will setup giant tents or other structures made out of strong materials (like faux wood cabins for a camp environment). It could technically be setup and shut down afterward if they have enough workers there. Can't wait to see what the actual setup is going to be  :)

Sounds like you’re referring to a setup at Rady. Yeah, tents sound like a good idea - or perhaps several canopies to shield against some weather. Can’t wait for more details!

Why would they need to do that?  That isn't customary for any events held at the Rady Shell the last few years that I'm aware of.  If the event is in the evening/night, there's no need for any sort of tents.  Maybe they'd have cool stage set dressing sort of thing, similar to the booth theme: is that what you're talking about?

FWIW, The Rady Shell is a wonderful venue; I'll be there next Mother's Day weekend to watch STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE w/Symphony accompaniment.  I like to shell out for the better seats w/tables, have a nice meal & some wine to make a fun evening out of it.  I haven't seen any non-live music events at the Shell, so I'll be curious to see what Funko does with the space: while it may allow for more attendees, it may also feel quite a bit less intimate/overkill but I've never attended Funko Days so I don't know.  I'll be curious to see what the price is at the new venue, capacity/configuration Funko goes with (there are a multitude of different configurations they can use, albeit the "private events" are typically configured MUCH smaller than the larger symphony/pops concerts), etc.

I have a feeling they will do more with the Rady Shell in terms of custom setup there than other events held there before, and related somehow to the theme for this year. It's just a hunch, we''ll see if I'm right   :D

It will definitely be interesting to see what they do!

Did they announce the theme at WonderCon?

I don’t think so. But whenever I get anything concrete, I’ll update the main post.
I’m rather curious as to how they’ll execute the party with 5x the attendees lol.
Additionally, it seems like they’ll be moving to a concert stage configuration vs one that’s centralized like last year.

There is a lot of speculation that it's Summer Camp.

hopefully i can get tickets this year!

summer camp theme would be nice, meaning you can dress in shorts since it will be really out outside.

Where did the 5x number come from? I know the Shell has a listed capacity of 10,000 but that's likely for concert-style seating (aka no tables, which is hard to imagine). I have a vague recollection from the initial announcement at Fundays 2022 that the plan was to double the attendance (so from ~2K at the Manchester Grand Hyatt to ~4K at the Shell), but definitely don't 100% trust my recall of that.

Can you imagine if it was Ski Resorts instead?  Lots of parkas  >:D

Pretty sure Mike said 10,000 when I heard it. The event was loud so perhaps I did not hear correctly.
