Not surprised to see this. The recent E3 drama that began in 2019 by Sony gave many companies the playbook that doing things virtually is probably better, rather than spending a lot to go somewhere. Also, I don’t believe SSC is in trouble, but like with many companies today, cutting cost is very important now. Thus, I’m not shocked with what SSC said. I believe Sony said something similar about E3 recently.

Well, I have a feeling they won't be attending NYCC either now.
They haven’t lately, so expect the same.

I like how Sideshow acts like they are doing us a favor by not coming to the Con. If they don't think it's worth coming to the Con how long before DC. Marvel and the movie studios decide it's not worth it? :'(

I think this makes it clear that it may not be just a 1 year absence.  They are re-evaluating their marketing strategy.  I think they are holding on to their exhibit floor space and subleasing it to keep that option open.  But I have no doubt they will crunch the numbers and evaluate cost benefit.  If they get a good enough response from their virtual con, I don't see them coming back to SDCC anytime soon.  At least not at the scale they have in the past.  But I don't know what would be worse, deciding not to come at all or to come back with a much smaller booth that's an echo of it's former self.

Sony going virtual made sense though since most of what they bring to E3 was digital goods.  Sideshow's goods, on the other end, are all physical goods.  So while they'll be able to reach more people online, you lose the tangible feeling of the figure existing right in front of you.  It's hard to see the quality of materials, minute details, the sheer presense of the figure when it's through a screen.

Now I'm not a big sideshow person but I do collect an absurd amount of anime figures.  And I can't count the amount of times where I see a picture of a figure and you're like that's nice but not sure if I want to pull the trigger.  Then you see it in person and you just throw your wallet at it.

Who knows, maybe this virtual strategy will be good for them, in terms of growing their audience (and an obvious cost savings for them).

TOTALLY agree; Sideshow's stuff looks "interesting" on a computer screen, if not "wow: that's expensive!"  But seeing that stuff live and appreciating the artistry is what the kicker is.  The relatively few things I've bought from them were purchased after marveling at Comic-Con

I'm bummed about this, as I've a lot of Sideshow pieces, and I use SDCC to get a really good look at those incoming statues that I might be interested in.  Very bummed out that they won't be there.
