CBS, Mid-Season, Hannibal
« on: May 18, 2012, 06:52:28 AM »

One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this new drama from Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies," "Heroes"), based on the characters from Thomas Harris' classic novels, we see where this incredible story began.

Will Graham is a gifted criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI. Graham's unique way of thinking gives him the astonishing ability to empathize with anyone - even psychopaths. He seems to know what makes them tick. But when the mind of the twisted killer he's pursuing is too complicated for even Will to comprehend, he enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, one of the premier psychiatric minds in the country. Armed with the uncanny expertise of the brilliant doctor, Will and Hannibal (known as a serial killer only to the audience) form a brilliant partnership and it seems there's no villain they can't catch. If Will only knew...

Starring brilliant young actor Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, "Hannibal" will breathe new life into a deadly classic.

CrossBones

It's 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard, reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder's paradise, this is a place like no other on earth - and a mounting threat to international commerce. To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the buccaneers' haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But the closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple. Lowe can't help but admire the political ideals of Blackbeard, whose thirst for knowledge knows no bounds - and no law. But Lowe is not the only danger to Blackbeard's rule. He is a man with many villainous rivals and one great weakness - a passionately driven woman whom he cannot deny.

From the award-winning creator of "Luther," Neil Cross, and award-winning producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, comes an extraordinary action adventure with an unexpected moral center where one can't be sure whether the pirates or the British crown are the villains.

From the award-winning creator of "Luther," Neil Cross, and successful producing team of Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald ("Gladiator," "Men in Black," "The Ring") comes an extraordinary action-adventure series "Crossbones" -- with an unexpected moral center where one can't be sure whether the pirates or the British crown are the villains.

Ten episodes of "Crossbones" have been ordered and production will begin in the fall.

Brian Fuller is amazing and Pushing Daisies is one of my favorite shows ever but NBC has a horrible track record lately with new shows that it'll be hard to commit to watching this since I think NBC may cancel after a few episodes.

Would've preferred this on something like HBO where it can be a little more violent.

Crossbones sounds very interesting & different! Nice to see some originality. As for Hannibal, sounds a bit too much like Dexter for me.

Mads Mikkelsen To Play Hannibal Lecter In NBC Series ‘Hannibal’

Mads Mikkelsen, hot off winning the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Hunt and scoring the villain role in Thor 2, has been cast as the title character in NBC’s upcoming drama series Hannibal. In his U.S. TV debut, Danish-born Mikkelsen will star opposite Hugh Dancy in the 13-episode series from Gaumont International Television, written and executive produced by Bryan Fuller and executive produced by Martha DeLaurentiis. The project is described as a contemporary thriller featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon — FBI agent Will Graham (Dancy) and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mikkelsen) - who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship. Graham is a gifted criminal profiler on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI who enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, one of the premier psychiatric minds in the country, with no clue about his darker side. The role was made famous by Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar for Silence Of The Lambs.

Mikkelsen, repped by UTA and Denmark’s Art Management, has been on a villainous streak, having also played the bad guy in the James Bond film Casino Royale. Hannibal is executive produced by Fuller, De Laurentis, Sara Colleton, Jesse Alexander and Katie O’Connell. David Slade is directing/executive producing the pilot.

It'd be worth considering the creepiness factor that seems to constantly emanate from Dr. Lecter's persona. The guy they tap to play the character needs some pretty formidable acting chops. Check out Mads Mikkelsen in Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising, and you'll realize how he's got what it takes to get the creepy crawlies that is requisite for playing Hannibal. Refn also directed Drive, the Ryan Gosling vehicle (no pun intended).

Good casting in my opinion.
