This is my first time attending SDCC and I'm staying in the Mission Valley area which is on the shuttle route.

I've got a question for people who have taken the shuttle before to and from the convention center:

1) Is it easy to get on board? Like, would each shuttle be so full and crowded that you can't go up the shuttle and have to wait for the next one?
2) Based on your experience, can you get a seat on the bus or do you have to stand all the way to your destination?

Thanks!

I don't believe they let people stand. The buses are very comfortable and cool. We just spent a few days in Yosemite fighting for space on their shuttles and I kept thinking how nice the SDCC shuttles are in comparison :)

There will be times when you may have to wait for another shuttle, time of day is the main factor. When you are leaving the hotel part of it also depends on where you are located on the shuttle route. We haven't stayed in Mission Valley but hopefully others will have more specific advice.

I would like to confirm that the shuttle would travel in the order that is listed on the route? For example for the Red Route, I assume the shuttle would start picking people up at Handlery Hotel San Diego, then proceed to Crowne Plaza San Diego, so on and so forth, and end at Town & Country Resort before it travels to the Convention Center?

And when it travels back from the Convention Center, they would drop off at Handlery Hotel again and down the list?

That is correct.  The shuttle stops in the list order from top to bottom, whether or not it is going to or from the convention center.
Therefore, the Handlery would be the longest trip to the convention center, but the shortest trip from the convention center.

Can confirm that's the order for the red route.  And *if* they operate like last year, they will send empty red buses straight to Town and Country as well.  It usually takes them an hour on Thursday morning to remember "oh yea, we have to do this every year because there are a lot of people staying at this hotel" but once they "remember" it's fine for the rest of the weekend.

I've stayed in Mission Valley before and the shuttle was great! My advice there is to check where you are in that order. The earlier you are on the route, the faster you're going to get on a shuttle because it won't be filled up yet. If you're lower on the pickup list, plan ahead and leave a bit earlier that way if they do fill up and you have to wait for the next one, you'll still be on schedule. Worst that happens is your downtown earlier for wherever you are lining up anyway!

We stayed at Courtyard Mission Valley and it was maybe 25 minutes max to downtown. I think maybe one day we had to wait for the next one. We were on a fairly easy schedule that year and got on the shuttle around 7:30/8 every morning.
Do these tacos taste funny to you?

Some routes are the same there and back. Others go in reverse order but having stayed at town and country in the past I know they stay the same order going to and coming back. That route usually drops off at Petco so you have to walk a bit still but nothing crazy
Fun isn’t something one considers when preparing for Comic-Con, but attending does put a smile on my face

Thanks for the tips, everyone!

My hotel is in the later half of the red route. Should I walk to Handlery instead to get a higher chance of boarding the shuttle or is it unnecessary? Google maps says it’s about a 10 min walk and it seems reasonable.

I’ve been at town and country twice. I never had an issue getting on a shuttle except one morning but that was for opening day and prior to the floor opening when everyone was trying to get in.

We’re staying at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites - anyone have an idea where the closest shuttle is since it’s not an official Con hotel??  Thanks for any ideas  :)

Your only real shuttle option is to walk up to Broadway and 6th and use the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown stop curbside on 6th, which is a block or so North of Gaslamp Plaza Suites.
This stop services three hotels, Courtyard, Hotel Palomar, and Andaz, so I'm not sure what the crowds will be like.
Other than that, you can walk the 8 blocks or so down 5th to the convention center.
